What is outdoor digital signage?

Outdoor digital signage is a weatherproof screen housed in a sealed, temperature-controlled enclosure, designed to run outside all year. It is much brighter than an indoor screen so it stays readable in daylight, and it is managed through cloud software like any other display. Common formats are freestanding totems, wall-mounted displays and battery A-boards.

What to check before buying

  1. 1Check whether you need planning permission or advertisement consent for your location. Your local council can advise.
  2. 2Plan power and an internet connection to the screen position before installation.
  3. 3Choose a freestanding totem, wall-mounted display or a movable battery A-board.
  4. 4Consider viewing distance: people driving past need larger text and simpler messages.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need planning permission for an outdoor digital screen?

Often you will. Illuminated outdoor advertisements in England usually need advertisement consent, and rules vary by location. Check with your local planning authority before installation; we can provide screen details for your application.

Can an outdoor screen survive a UK winter?

Purpose-built outdoor displays are sealed and temperature-controlled to run outside all year. A normal indoor screen in a box is not a safe substitute.

What is the difference between outdoor LCD and LED?

Outdoor LCD gives a sharp picture at close viewing distances, which suits totems and entrances. Direct-view LED suits larger screens and fascias seen from further away. Our LED vs LCD guide explains the trade-offs.
